June 4 Rifle Program Newsletter

Both the heat and the rain held off, and we ended up with a pretty nice day last Saturday.  Fourteen shooters showed up and fired 23 matches, tying our all-time high.  There were 12 Garand matches fired and eight Carbine.  The M1 Carbine is getting popular.  Not surprising because it's fun to shoot, easy to load, and doesn't kick like a mule.

Of the eight Carbine matches, five earned Achievement Pins, including a gold by Michael Smith.  Well done.  Carbine is proving our most competitive class.  But, there's nothing like the authoritative boom of an M1.  Music to my ears.

We had a couple of walk-ins who did not get to shoot because relays were full.  We have only 8 positions per relay on our 100-yard range.  We usually run three relays, but will add a fourth, if there is enough interest.  I strongly suggest reserving your slots in advance, especially for the first and second relays.  Call or email me within two weeks of the event.  Reservations close the preceding Thursday because I must get packed up on Friday.  Also, please arrive in enough time to get registered, etc.  If a reserved slot is not occupied within 10 minutes of the relay starting time, the slot will be given to any walk-in competitors who are waiting to shoot.

Saturday, 18 June 2011, Crooked Creek will host a CMP Rimfire Sporter Match (reduced) and a Smallbore Silhouette Match on the 100-yard range.  Only four positions per relay are available for Silhouette, so reserve your spot in advance.  I've had a number of questions on legal Silhouette rifles.  This season, because we're introducing the sport and are not sanctioned, it's pretty much "run what you brung."  Please bring standard velocity ammo, under 1,300 fps.  The hot stuff will blow our targets apart.  Silhouette is very challenging and a lot of fun.  There is something very satisfying about the "ping" and seeing your target go flying.

The next Garand match is Saturday, 16 July.

Thanks to our volunteers, Ed Arlow and Steve McKee, who ran their usual smooth, fun match.

A little plug for a local business.  The Trumbull Locker, about a mile north of Crooked Creek on Rt. 534, provides excellent custom-made sandwiches and other stuff for lunch.  Order in advance, 440-474-4631, and pick 'em up.

Thanks to everyone who came out to shoot with us.  See you on the range.
